Where to stay in Jerusalem

Planning a trip to Jerusalem? Hotels, guesthouses and hostels abound in the Holy City. Here are a few which deserve special mention either because of their special aura, the wonderful view from their windows, or because they are both charming and inexpensive. Prices quoted range from exorbitant to very reasonable. So if the King David Hotel is too rich for your blood, read on until you find exactly the right lodgings to suit your pocket!

Note: (Prices are for a double room. Prices recently updated for November 2001. Confirm the prices when making a reservation). If you are israeli, please note that you have to add a 17% VAT (Value Added Tax) to the price mentioned here.

    King David Hotel - Jerusalem
  • Historic and inspiring, the King David Hotel boasts rooms facing both the Old and New cities. You don't have to stay here overnight to enjoy what this hotel has to offer: you can flop down on a comfortable chair in what is known as the "People Watching Lobby". In fact, they say that if you sit here long enough you will see everyone who is anyone! Famous figures that have visited the King David Hotel include Heads of State Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat, Prince Philip, his son Charles, actor Ben Kingsly and pugilist Muhammad Ali.

Prices: $265 per double room till the end of November 2001. (The most expensive are on higher floors, across from the Old City). Price includes breakfast.

  • The American Colony Hotel was established at the beginning of this century, inside a villa built by a rich Arab effendi nearly 150 years ago! The mixed European-Oriental atmosphere, combined with luxurious surroundings and the hospitality for which Arabs are justifiably famous, makes this an unusually attractive setting. Bonus: live oriental music on Friday afternoons in the garden cafe. Gift shops on the other side of the driveway offer orieginal paintings, decorative knives, Middle eastern materials and other items.

Price: $230 - $340 per double room include breakfast (The higher price is for the super-elegant rooms that the effendi built specially for his own use and for that of his four wives).

  • Jerusalem Home Exchange

Exchanging homes with Israeli families is another way to keep your expenses low. It is recommended for people who dare to leave their homes in the hands of others, and it is usually done way ahead of time, where the two parties correspond by e-mail and develop a relationship of mutual trust.

We have heard of some very successful home exchanges that became traditional between two families, we have also heard of disappointing exchanges.

    The offers available now are:

    • A family with two children (9 and 10 years old) wishes to exchange homes with a family from the Netherlands this summer. Dates negotiable. They prefer the vicinity of Amsterdam or near attractions that would be fun for children.
